Home Inventory Programs

We recommend that all of our clients take an inventory of the items in their homes. Should a loss occur, you are usually so busy dealing with the details that it's hard to recall every item you will need to replace. You may be a victim of a partial loss and it's hard to remember every piece of jewelry until you go to a cocktail party and realize that Great Aunt Ida's broach is missing.

There are many methods of doing so, from something as simple as a list jotted down in a notebook to an app on their phone that categorizes each item and stores photos of them as well. Try to record a brief description, the model/serial number, where/when you purchased it and how much it was. If you have the receipt available, that's even better.

Honestly, it doesn't matter how you do it, the important thing is to record your STUFF. Once your list is made, make copies and store them with a trusted friend or family member, your Agent, or upload them online for safe keeping. Here are some online resources to help you:

Know Your Stuff - The Insurance Information Institute has put together a resource that lets you record all your stuff and then stores the list online. It's accessible from any internet connection, and there's virtually no chance that a disaster will destroy both your items AND your list as well.

How to create a Home Inventory - The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) has put together this guide, with a downloadable PDF to help you. They have also included links to both iPhone and Android Home Inventory apps

Home Inventory Software Reviews - Top Ten Reviews compared 10 of the home inventory software packages out there. If you're computer savvy, this might be the thing that will help you get your inventory done once and for all.

CNet Free Home Inventory Software Downloads - There are also many free software options available. CNet is a great place to go to find available downloads. Read the reviews and choose one.

Glossaries

Chu & Associates has put together a fairly comprehensive Property & Casualty (including Liability) Glossary for your use, as well as a Health & Life Glossary. And of course, you are always welcome to call us!
